It is possible today to furnish an imaginary house with doll sized furniture from top to bottom. These traditional toys have flourished amongst the explosion of electronic gadgets and have changed very little in style and design. You may wonder why, faced with the stiff competition of computer games, hand held electronic games and mobile phones even, these traditional toys are still in existence.
The answer is easy: because the demand is still there!
It would appear that there is a kind of electronic backlash or revolution taking place where adults, seeing the future all too well, are harking back to better days when kids played with \'real\' traditional toys and did not sit half comatose watching a screen for several hours at a time. Today\'s children can play great imaginary games with the doll furniture adding to the realism of the event. They pick out wardrobes, beds, cribs, high chairs or indeed anything that will make their \'baby\' happy.
Long story lines, or just daily routines, are acted out with perhaps their friends dollies coming to tea and sitting around the doll sized dining room table complete with chairs and cushions. All help with the social interactivity between children or adults. As opposed to computer games and the like, traditional toys offer a wide opportunity for the adult to get involved. By joining in a child will learn first hand that play is good and that conflicts, if they arise, can be talked out. The only thing a child will learn about conflict on a computer game is when confronted by \'the enemy\' its ok to kill him!
The adult will \'connect\' with the child in a much easier, less confrontational, level whilst playing with traditional toys. Problem areas can be broached without the child feeling that you are \'in his face\'.There is also another aspect to the some of the doll\'s furniture on offer today. Some are made from sustainable resources and organic materials. What a great way to teach the child about the world we live in and how to make less impact on it to ensure a safe and \'green\' future for their kids.
Of course, the possibilities are endless. By talking of the future the child will understand that he/she too will have children or relationships and that their children may be playing with the same toys when they are the same age. The concept of \'the future\' may be a bit abstract for younger children but when you are putting dolly to bed you can talk about \'when you have a baby\' etc. So perhaps this is the answer then. Traditional children\'s toys give the parent or adult ample opportunity to interact with the child. Doll\'s furniture in particular lends realism to the scenario of \'normal\' family life and routine which in turn gives a very non-confrontational arena for many other subjects to be broached. It gives the parent time to slow down, connect and communicate with the child on a level not available when the kid is stuck to the computer screen!
