When your child was born, you put extra locks on the windows and special clips on the cabinet doors. You hid away the cleaning products and moved all glass and breakable items out of the path of curious hands. You have childproofed your home successfully for a time and a place, but your child is growing up and becoming an active member of society. Is your home still safe?
Your uneducated and naive child is not safe as long as there is a computer in your home. The computer, along with access to the Internet, opens your child up to a large and terrifying world he or she may not be prepared to handle. While you can\'t protect your child from every worldly danger, you can take the time to prepare your child to deal with difficult situations by talking about the dangers of the Internet and the possibility of contact by online predators.
Never leave your computer in a private place such as a bedroom or closed office. The family computer should be left in the kitchen or living room to give you the ability to monitor your child\'s Internet activity at all times. Make sure your child knows that he or she should not be talking to strangers, even online. If they use instant messaging programs make sure the computer speakers are turned on and leave the messaging program set to sound an alert whenever a message is sent or received. This tool will let you know your child is engaged in a conversation and will allow you to check-in and monitor the topic of conversation.
While you are talking to your child about the dangers of the Internet, explain what online predators are and what they do. Be sure your child understands that online predators exist in the physical world as well as online. Make sure your child has a basic understanding of how to defend himself if ever approached or attacked by a stranger. While you don\'t necessarily need to show your child pictures or raise alarm, you should be aware of what online predators reside in your neighborhood. This information can be found online through federal databases.
Even though the Internet has become a very valuable tool, it has also become a source of angst and fear as millions of people use and misuse the Internet on a daily basis. Talk to your child about the Internet and computer safety. Doing so will make you feel more secure about your child navigating this aspect of the world.
