It's pretty amazing how far technology has come, and how much it can actually help us these days. We've come to almost take advantage of the fact that technology is so far along, and we often don't think about how grateful we should be about that.
One such area where technology has absolutely made our lives better is with our eyes and vision. At the forefront of that is lasik surgery. It's meant the end, for millions of Americans now, of having to struggle with glasses and contacts; and not only Americans but people all over the world - over 87 different countries to be more precise.
Gone are the days of having to go through every eye glass frame in the entire store just to find that right one that doesn't look too terrible. Gone also are the days of having to stick your fingers in your eyes, nearly poking out your eyeballs in order to get your contact in - usually hoping that you're not going to drop it down the drain when you miss. Worse yet is when all of a sudden your contact is doing weird things in your eyes, making them scratched and burning.
Instead of all that people are more and more going in for the easy and quick lasik surgery. Though quite quick, it's anything less than complex, but with technology the way it's advanced, it's actually pretty hard to tell.
Lasik surgery helps those people with the conditions of myopia (near sightedness), hyperopia (commonly known as far sightedness) and astigmatism, which basically makes it difficult for a person to see fine detail in an object.
Usually a man by the name of Ioannis Pallikaris, out of Greece, is credited for developing the lasik surgery procedure; however the FDA didn't jump on board with the procedure until 1997. Lasik eye surgery has had a profound effect on the world's vision problems, making it possible to correct problems that not too long were irreparable, and only treatable with glasses or contact lenses.
Now, with a quick surgery that could be as short as a half an hour - about 15 minutes for each eye - vision problems can be a thing of the past for even the worst sufferers.
The surgery itself, as I stated before isn't one that's as simple as it may sound. In all actuality it's two procedures in one that is being performed. The first part of the procedure involves making a corneal flap - meaning that the surgeon, using a computer controlled laser procedure, will cut the flap in the cornea to be folded back. This exposes the area of the eye called the stroma; basically under the lens of the eye which is made of a tough fibrous type of tissue that's very firm in order to protect your eye. Next the laser, with the utmost precision will then vaporize a portion of stroma and the flap is laid back in place.
The process is called refraction, where the cornea is reshaped so that the correct amount of light comes through to the eye, which corrects most vision problems.
One of the greatest things about lasik surgery is that the results can usually be seen within one day; usually the day after the procedure has been performed. In a nutshell, the whole process is fast, done with minimal amount of pain to the patient, heals fast, and leaves room for the patient to have future adjustments if needed.
To avoid pain, the surface of the eye is numbed with an eye drop anesthetic. The patient is kept awake during the process as well because there is such minimal pain.
Before even considering having this surgery you first must find out if you're a candidate for it. This means seeing a ophthalmologist, getting a diagnosis of your sight problems, and evaluating what the correctional procedure would be. It's important that you find a doctor that you trust, and that has been recommended by a trusted source. Speak at length with your doctor and ask any and all questions that you may be concerned about.
All in all, twenty years ago this surgery would have been thought of as a miracle to those with common vision problems that can now easily and quickly be fixed by this process.
