Any concerned parent has seen the startling bullying statistics that shows that 77% of students admit to being bullied. These bullying statistics often result in disconcerting thoughts about the school system and thankfulness that your child is not suffering. However most parents, who have a child being bullied, are not aware of the abuse at all.
How can you be sure?
Children being bullied are most likely afraid to talk about their experiences at all. The child, who might already have self esteem problems, may be afraid to tell you because they think it will expose weakness in them. Even still, bullying statistics show that most students who are bullied are often threatened to keep it quiet. The fear of their parents going to school officials and exposing their disclosure may also cause the secrecy. In the victim's point of view bringing school officials in to the ordeal only results in public scrutiny and more bullying.
The best way to deal with the subject is to handle with care. Your child will probably deny being bullied, bullying statistics show. Try to tell them that no one deserves to be bullied and that it's not their fault. Don't pressure your child in to talking about his situation. Bullying statistics illustrate that your child will only talk about his ordeal when you're both calm.
Once you have identified the bully you can make a plan of action to stop the torment. If you go to the school with your problem make sure they treat it as a serious issue. Bullying statistics show that most schools think of bullying as harmless teasing. Make it very clear to your school what your situation is and what you would like to see happen in the future. Give them specific details such as who is involved, what type of bullying, where it takes place, etc... If you take bullying seriously then you can force into making your school take it seriously.
Take a second look at those bullying statistics. Ask yourself if your child is represented in them. Then take the necessary action to eliminate the problem.
