Build the Special Brand Called You and Compete with the Big Boys

July 27th, 2008 · No Comments

You are Special

Let's not be romantic here. But everybody is special. Do you have a distinctive mark about the way you do your job and serve your clients? Do you deliver on projects ahead of time, are your dealings polite and pleasing, is your product good, or is your cost affordable? Do you anticipate problems for your clients and offer them solutions ahead, do you solve your customers' service related worries, or do you offer creative ideas? You must have something that sets you apart from the rest, it cannot be otherwise. You need a brand to highlight that specialty. In case of more than one special quality, the brand can be built on one core special quality and other qualities can be added on.

This is an age of individuals. Self expression is at its best now. This is an age when young children have their own brands, not necessarily for the purpose of going into business. The Internet is full of blogs and web sites of young kids expressing about whom they are and what they want. In their efforts to improve social transactions they define clearly what kind of people they are going to be associated with and what kind of people they want to stay away from. Here are a few excerpts (some funny ones) that express who they are:

"I guess violent video games make you more aggressive. So I stay away from games that contain too much violence."

"Wear polka dots so luck will shower all over you!"

"I am a cool, confident (that's how it's spelled in the blog) person."

"I like Hercules because he was a hero. Hercules is the strongest God."

The first statement is issued by a 12 year old boy on his blog. This is a message to other boys of the same age group having similar thoughts about violent video games so that they can become friends and maybe trade video games. The children also showcase their talents like painting, singing, and song writing or anything else that they are good at. Julian Sage Miyata is one such young singer that has his own blog. At the age of 11 he has some laudable performances to his credit. His blog on My Space is helping him in his efforts to get noticed and invited to perform. Akiana is another child artist and poet that has her own web site. She is a child prodigy and has already been featured on the Oprah show. But you need not be a prodigy to have your own brand.

It's not only the talented children that have brands, almost every child that's web savvy tries to build his brand by creating a web site or a blog. The Internet provides the easiest and cheapest option to build a brand. So the children are using it. That's remarkable, but more than that the fact that such young people are going ahead to define themselves so openly is the characteristic that typifies the times we are living in.

When the process of branding sets in at such a tender age, what stops you the businessman, the artist, singer, athlete, or the motivational speaker from having your own brand? If children can create their brand simply to have an identity, why can't you do the same?
