Unfortunately, criminals and predators have equal access to this information and use it daily in their search for unsuspecting victims. Internet chat rooms are great tools for meeting new people, networking, making friends, or finding potential love interests. Sadly, there is no way for you to know whether or not the person you are speaking to is an online predator or genuine friend. Never give out specific personal information such as your full name or location. Keep detailed information such as the name of your school or employer private as well. It takes a small amount of information for an online predator to narrow down a general location and find a way to stalk a victim.
While not everyone you meet will turn out to be an online predator, you need to remain defensive at all times. Online predators prey upon trusting individuals and take advantage of those who are in search of love and attention. Letting an online predator too far into your life puts you in danger of physical harm up to and including death. While some online predators are merely looking for a good time, others are looking to cause more serious harm. You may find yourself the victim of a sexual attack or rape, or find yourself kidnapped and held captive for slavery, torture, or sale on the black market. These things do exist and can happen to any unwitting victim.
The Internet is not a toy, but a privilege. Some schools are educating children about the dangers posed by sexual predators online, but there is only so much the school systems can do without the support of parents at home. In today\'s litigious society, many schools are afraid to approach topics of conversation that parents may deem inappropriate for younger children, even though the information they could be teaching includes important points that could help to save your child\'s life. Local law enforcement agencies are setting up specific task forces to track down online predators, but they can not be everywhere at all times. You are the first line of defense when it comes to the safety of yourself and your children.
Talk to your children frequently about the dangers associated with using the Internet. The Internet can be an amazing tool when used properly and in a safe manner.
