Encourage social interaction
\r Regular contact with other children and their families is a great way of developing self confidence in social situations. Remember to mirror for your child confidence and ease with others.

Be consistent
\r A child with strong, familiar boundaries has more opportunities for self confidence as he is exposed to fewer fearful situations.

Follow routines
\r Regular, consistent, dependable routines encourage confidence in everyday life.

Regular, safe exposure to new situations
\r Introduce your child to different and unfamiliar playground, walks, and people. Encourage him to explore. Take part in different sports, musical activities, interests.

Explain, educate, talk, listen
\r Communicate your feelings, hopes, fears and dreams. Help your child to discuss his feelings with you rather than to push them down or away. Teach him to say \”I feel sad, mad, happy, good, etc.\”

Encourage, praise, comment, support, cheer on
\r Every night tell your child something great that you noticed about him that day.

It\’s difficult to prove this one way or the other, as we cannot control all the other variables associated with verifying this. So instead of looking at the problems let\’s look at what we can do to help prevent our children becoming someone that the media writes about.

Everyone is shaped by the way they are parented, their peers and the media. What most parents want is to have well balanced children who know how to say \”yes\” to the good and \”no\” to the bad. We need to start while our children are still young to do this.

What is good parenting?

Good parenting is guiding our children and helping them to become the people they were meant to be. It is not emotionally badgering her into being the perfect child or clone of one of her parents. It\’s also definitely not about leaving her without any guidance or boundaries at all.

All parents want to keep their children safe and make them feel secure. But they also have to teach them how to make good choices for themselves and allow them the freedom in which to do this. To do this we need to create a place where our children feel both loved and secure. A child will feel secure when she has boundaries set, within which she can grow and also knows she\’s loved and that this love does not depend on what she does. Because of this we should never link boundaries or discipline with our child receiving or not receiving love from us. She needs to know that she does not lose love when she disagrees with us or has her own ideas.

Boundaries

Children are not born with boundaries they have to develop them. Parents need to set boundaries to give their children the information they need to enable them to make good decisions on which to build their lives. A Child has to learn that she cannot have or do everything she wants. If you give into your child because of tantrums and whining then you are teaching her that this is the correct way to get whatever you want. It can be very easy to give in especially when you are tired but it is important that you are consistent. Inconsistency is one of our greatest enemies and sends a child the completely wrong message.

The way we train or allow our children to respond to boundaries or discipline will affect the rest of their lives. We should never link boundaries or discipline with our child receiving or not receiving love from us. Our child need to know that she does not loose love when she disagrees with us, others or has her own ideas.

Discipline

What is discipline? To some people the word discipline gives them a very negative feeling. Discipline is in fact an external boundary, designed to develop internal boundaries and behavior. Discipline involves teaching, prevention and instruction. It provides structure in life and helps a child to develop into a responsible adult who understands right from wrong.

Good parenting involves both teaching her how to develop self discipline, which is prevention, as well as showing that her actions result in certain outcomes. These consequences are intended to increase a child\’s sense of responsibility and control over her own life. A child needs to be taught to take responsibility for her own actions and parents need to train her to do this for herself.

Discipline and boundaries are something that children need and we do not help our children by withholding them.

Good parenting is not always easy and all parents will make mistakes so do not give yourself a hard time when this happens but instead be prepared to learn from the experience.

Next, put out a press release on your company. Let the people know what\’s going on with you if you have a new release or something new is going on. If you can\’t write an effective press release, get somebody who is an expert at press releases and have them write it for you. A press release can bring you an enormous amount of traffic it it\’s well written.

Finally, contact everybody you know. If you have favors coming to you, call them in. And the best way to have this advantage is to actually go out of your way to do something for another person. You can\’t imagine the good will that you will establish by simply going out and doing things for others. When you do this, the chance of them reciprocating is much greater.

Just these few simple things can send your results into a whole other orbit.

1) Have an inspection. For whatever reason there are many people who enter into a property flip situation without ever having a valid and complete inspection of the property made. This means you could be doing work that will need to be undone at some later point in the process. You want to avoid this situation if at all possible and it is easily done (in most cases) by having a thorough inspection. There will almost always however be some unanticipated surprises along the way.

2) Establish a budget and stick with it. Most people flipping houses plan a budget. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, very few actually stick to the budget they originally established. It is a good idea to leave a little wiggle room in your budget for unexpected emergencies but be firm on the spending limits for specific projects. If you go over on those projects eliminate something elsewhere in order to save money.

3) Consider the target buyer when making adjustments. You must understand when purchasing a house to flip that you are buying the house for someone else and you need to make adjustments, changes, and improvements according to what your target market demands, expects, and can afford to absorb the costs of you adding. It doesn\’t matter how beautiful you\’ve made the house if no one that is willing to live in the neighborhood can afford your asking price when all is said and done.

4) Remember that this is a business situation and don\’t refuse to consider offers that will net you a profit just because the profit isn\’t as good as you\’d like. A house sitting empty on the market accrues carrying costs and is ripe for all manner of disasters. You want to get in and out as quickly as possible so that you can free up your investment to move on to the next project. Entertain all offers seriously even if they aren\’t what you were hoping for. You never know when one might be the best you\’re going to get.

5) Don\’t take it personally. Once again a home is a very personal thing to most people. While you may have worked very hard selecting colors, materials, flooring, etc.

The traditional incandescent light bulb is the most familiar and commonly used type of light bulb in the United States. Compared to other lighting options, incandescent bulbs are the least costly to purchase, but the most expensive in application due to high energy consumption and a relatively short useful life. A halogen lamp, also referred to as a halogen tungsten lamp, is a type of incandescent light bulb that is more energy efficient and offers an alternative to traditional incandescent light bulbs.

Incandescent lamps in general produce light by utilizing the energy from electricity to heat and excite a tungsten filament, releasing photons, which are the basic units that make up all forms of light. A filament is a thin wire inside a bulb that gives off light when heat is introduced. When an incandescent light is turned on, tungsten evaporates from the filament and becomes affixed to the inside surface of the bulb wall. When there is no longer enough tungsten in the filament to conduct electricity, the filament gradually becomes more delicate and breaks, which is indicated by the bulb burning out.

Unlike standard incandescent light bulbs, halogen lamps contain a halogen gas, often iodine, within them. The shells of the bulbs are most often composed of quartz or a heat resistant hard glass rather than thin glass because of a high heat requirement for use. The halogen gas serves to return evaporated tungsten to the filament, instead of allowing it to permanently deposit itself onto the inside wall of the bulb. Fewer deposits inside the bulb result in a cleaner wall for light to penetrate, thus improving the luminance. Additionally, the process which allows tungsten to return to the filament increases the time it takes for the filament to break down, thus giving halogen bulbs a longer life than standard incandescent light bulbs. Like standard bulbs, halogen bulbs do burn out, but provide a longer useful life due to the slower dissipation of tungsten.

Halogen lights are popular for use in homes as well as industrial applications such as stadiums and medical facilities. Dimming capabilities make halogen light bulbs an attractive and versatile option for homes, but high heat can pose a hazard in certain situations.

Just as halogen lighting evolved from standard incandescent light bulbs for extended life and reduced energy consumption, viable alternative lighting solutions continue to be developed for the lighting industry. Fluorescent lights, which provide long life and low energy consumption, are widely available but require a higher initial investment than incandescent bulbs. Researching the positive and negative aspects of different lighting options will enable you to make an informed and appropriate lighting choice for your application.

As we head into a new year, the growth of our businesses will be the focus of strategy and planning sessions for at least the first quarter. Some of you early birds will have already begun this process in December, but for others the planning starts this month.

In my experience, strategic growth springs from the deliberate interplay of 3 business segments: the ability to increase income, the management of operational efficiencies, and great leadership to drive both the aforementioned.

Increasing income is more than just looking to broaden your current market. Other factors such as making each sale more profitable, cultivating more profitable vendor partnerships, as well as targeting unusual market opportunities (blue ocean strategies) are key components of planning for more profits.

Of course if you pour more water (income) into a bucket (your company) that already has a hole in the bottom, it is never going to fill (full of more profits). You need to look for the holes in your operation that are draining your profits. Cut inefficiencies and waste. Two areas to examine right away are how well you are using your existing financial and human resources. Watching how the money flows through your company will give you great insight so you can stop wasting it. Use those weekly financial meetings and reports to dig through your companies financial well being and make your money work for you! That is working smarter, not harder. Of course if your employees are not performing to the best of their abilities, they are wasting company profits too. So make sure you have those performance reviews ready and you know how you are going to motivate them this year through training and incentives to help them achieve their goals.

Finally, without great leadership, your company growth will not happen. Inspiring others to carry out your company vision takes skill and planning. Knowing how, when and what you are going to communicate to your employees is critical to gaining consensus, and thus company wide alignment. The alignment of ALL efforts makes the difference between a good year and a great year. One person pushing a boulder up hill cannot compete with the team effort of twenty.

Solid strategy comes from making a sound assessment of your current business practices. With that in mind let us review a new years checklist.

New Years Check List

Grow Income

**By Individual Sale. Are you making the most profit you can with each sale?

**New Internal Markets. Have you explored the entire potential of your current market?

**New External Markets. How many can you list?

**Alliances. How can you make profitable vendor or customer alliances this year?

Cut Waste

**Budgets. Are you using them?! effectively???

**Assets. Have you reviewed your current and long term assets for potential reassignment? Are there ways you could get your money to work for you?

**Cash Flow Management. Growth takes money. Do your financial projections reveal weak spots? Do not let yourself get caught in a cash crunch. Last minute loans can be expensive.

**Employees. Do your employees have clear goals and have you empowered them to achieve them?

**Operational Waste. How will you seek out and mitigate wasteful activities, systems, and behaviors?

Leadership

**Review mission and vision company statements. Do they state your vision clearly?

**Company wide training. What subjects and what kinds of training will you offer this year?

**Company events. How are you going to connect to your employees, customers and vendors this year as a leader?

These are the general areas you want to examine now. Remember, every business has its blind spot, so try to be as objective as possible. You do not have to get lost in the details but at least try to flesh out a strategy and simple plan for growth. It is the first step to working smarter, not harder.

Remember, you have unlimited growth potential. Have a successful 2008!
